Almost everyone, except Apple, has confirmed the release date of the iPhone 5. It’s looking like that date will be October 14th. AppleInsider has reported the news, by way of an update on the japanese website, Macotakara. The news coincides with previous reports, which were listing October 15th as a release date.

Nothing official has been announced as of yet, which means Apple has two weeks to let the world know if October 14th is the release date. There is an Apple event coming up on October 4th, when many believe Tim Cook will be making the announcement.

Earlier in the summer, the iOS 5 operating system was unveiled. AppleInsider also reported that the OS is expected to be provided to the handset manufacturers in the beginning of October.

An internal look at the components of the iPhone 4S or iPhone 5, or a completely doctored photo released on a chinese social media outlet (original link looks to be broken) ? You be the judge.

Phonearena.com broke the story, where a user leaked the supposed A5 chip photos on Weibo.com. As of now, very little is known concerning the photo. People are either saying it’s components for the iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, or complete bubkus.

Along with the A5 chip, the battery which can be seen at the bottom of the photo has been generating a fair share of buzz as well. The iPhone 4 has a 3.7 V, 5.25 Whr, and a 1420 mAh charge, with previous iPhone 5 photos boasting 3.7 V, 5.3 Whr, and 1430 mAh. If we look closely at this latest photo, we can see a completely different voltage count: 4.2 V.

Take the photo for what you will. Like all other leaked images, and rumors, all we have to go on is speculation. Have fun!

A survey conducted by ChangeWave between September 6-12 provides data which shows Apple shouldn’t be too worried about Job’s resignation …

A survey conducted by ChangeWave between September 6-12 provides data which shows Apple shouldn’t be too worried about Job’s resignation in terms of sales.

The survey consisted of 2,297 consumers, with only 4% of them saying they are “less likely” to buy Apple products in the future due to Job’s resignation. This percentage marks a sharp decline from when the same question was asked in 2008; then, 18% said they would be less likely to buy products.

Apple sales are particularly strong in the tablet market. Corporate IT buyers were surveyed in August, 80% stated they would purchase iPads for their company over any other tablet. This data is joined by the consumer market which went even higher, with 85% planning on buying an iPad.

While many of the hardcore Apple fanbase was saddened to see Steve Jobs leave, Apple sales look to remain just as strong as before. The brand itself looks to have become bigger than the man who started it all. The topic remains open, as we will have to keep a watch to see how the company performs in the long term without the captain at the helm.

Having used Windows for sometimes up to 14 hours a day the past 20+ years for business and pleasure, it never occurred to me to switch to a Mac until I saw the iMac 24” for the first time back in October 2006 – I just had to have it. Admittedly the fact that the new Mac’s have Intel processors and hence able to run Windows natively gave me the added comfort of being able to change my mind and just have a really pretty machine running Windows.

After having used Windows for many years – you orst of get used to re-booting, re-installing, hanging applications – not to mention viruses – in fact you hardly even get upset about it anymore, you just re-boot and wait for the time it takes to get back to what you were working on (if it is still there that is).

With Mac it is a different experience altogether – you actually get to spend nearly all your time using the computer for what it was intended to be used for – and not just trying to figure out why something is not working. In short – it just feels right. The reason I said “nearly” is because I tend to get carried away trying out new things on my Mac all the time including exploring the bundled applications such as Photo Booth, iCal, iPhoto, iDVD, iMovie, Garage Band and of course iTunes which I knew from my Windows days.

On this site I intend to share some of the things that I have experienced switching to Mac from Windows and how it is impacting on my life moving forward – considering I use a computer heavily every day. I will also be covering Mac related stories that I find news worthy as well as tips, hints and tricks that I come across.

When reading documentation I often found the terminologies referring to the Apple, Command, Option and alt keys very confusing, sometimes …

When reading documentation I often found the terminologies referring to the Apple, Command, Option and alt keys very confusing, sometimes they are exclusively represented by symbols instead of their names, so I thought it would be useful to give you a quick overview with the help of Wikipedia.

Command key

The Command key, known as the open-Apple key in documentation previous to the Apple Macintosh family of computers, is a modifier key present on Apple keyboards. An “extended” Macintosh keyboard—the most common type—has two command keys, one on each side of the space bar. Compact keyboards have one only on the left.

Manuals and other documentation commonly uses the symbol ⌘ (U+2318 in decimal) to represent the Command key. The clover symbol has no official name, but is often given nicknames like ‘”splat”, “butterfly”, “squiggle”, “beanie”, “flower”, “cauliflower”, “propeller” or “shamrock.” Some believe the symbol to be named the “infinite loop”, which is also the address for Apple world headquarters: 1 Infinite Loop, Cupertino, CA 95014. Unicode standards documents call it the Place of Interest Sign.

Option key

The Option key, also known as Alt key is a modifier key present on Apple keyboards. It is located between the Control key and Command key on a standard Macintosh keyboard. For desktop keyboards, there are usually two, while a laptop may have only one to make room for the arrow keys.

The key usually has the word “alt” written above “option” as well, for compatibility with Windows programs running under emulators, as well as Unix programs. In Mac OS X and Mac OS 9 however, it functions differently from the Alt key under Microsoft Windows and Unix-like systems. Most notably, it is not used to access menus or hotkeys, but is instead used as a modifier for other command codes, and also to provide easier access to various accents and symbols.

Apple commonly uses the symbol ⌥ (U+2325, 8997 in decimal) to represent the option key. This symbol represents a microswitch, allowing the current to go one of two directions.

You can read more about the Option and Command keys on Wikipedia.

One of the things that I missed from my Windows says was the ability to select a number of files and the from the right-click sub menu select “properties” which would then give the combined size of the files I had selected.

You can very easily to the same on your Mac – simply select the files you want (you should use the “Apple” key to select non-consecutive files) and then either

ctrl+Apple-key+I

or

Right-click and then hit ctrl and the “Get info” will change to “Get summary info”
(or ctrl+click if you only have one mouse button – and then hold ctrl)

You will then get one single info summary screen for the files you have selected with the combined size.

Being a former Windows user I always used to bit “Windows+L” to lock my machine when I left it – even for a short time.

On a Mac there are a few ways you can do something similar – my favorite is the following:

1. System Preferences > Security

2. Tick the “Require password to wake this computer from sleep or screensaver”

3. System Preferences > Dashboard & Exposé

4. In Active Screen Corners choose ex lower left corner and select “Start Screen Saver”

To lock your machine – simply move your mouse to the lower left-hand corner.

Most of the maintenance required on a Mac is done automatically in the background when you are not using your …

Most of the maintenance required on a Mac is done automatically in the background when you are not using your machine. The general maintenance scripts that cleans up your system and keeps things running smooth are run daily, weekly and monthly depending on the tasks. If you have set your Mac to sleep at night or if you switch off your machine you should run the scripts manually.

To check when the scripts were last executed, launch Terminal (from Applications/Utilities) and type the following:

ls -al /var/log/*.out

which will return something like:
-rw-r–r– 1 root wheel 124232 Dec 17 03:15 /var/log/daily.out
-rw-r–r– 1 root wheel 738 Dec 1 05:30 /var/log/monthly.out
-rw-r–r– 1 root wheel 3118 Dec 16 03:17 /var/log/weekly.out

You can then run these routines manually if they have not been running automatically as scheduled by launching Terminal (from Applications/Utilities) using your Admin account. You can even execute all three maintenance scripts at once, as follows:

At the Terminal prompt, type the following, exactly as written:

sudo periodic daily weekly monthly and press Return.

Type your Admin password when prompted, then press Return again.

All three scripts will run in sequence and they are completed when the Terminal prompt returns. You can also run the scripts individually. For example, to run just the daily script, you would type the command:

sudo periodic daily and press Return
